Mike Locke Stadium is ready to host games and events following improvements made this summer to enhance the athlete and spectator experience.
The stadium project was part of the district’s proactive capital spending plan. Bleachers at the stadium were updated to improve accessibility for all guests, including the addition of ramps and designated wheelchair seating. The turf field and track were replaced, and the scoreboard, sound system, and press box were updated as well.
“The improvements made this summer were planned as part of our long-term financial plan and the Board of Education proactively prepared for these expenses,” said Superintendent Kiya Hunt. “With these updates, we’ve enhanced the safety and comfort for students, athletes, musicians, and guests, and look forward to many more years of great games and events with our community at Mike Locke Stadium.”
The 12-year-old turf field had reached the end of its life expectancy of 10-12 years and the track began to show wear and tear; these improvements will ensure the safety of our student-athletes and visiting teams in our facilities. The cost of these updates was approximately $720,000.
ADA compliance upgrades to the bleacher stairs at the stadium cost approximately $167,000 and make the stadium more accessible for all students, staff, families, and community members.
Thank you to Eastern Gas Transmission Storage for a $20,000 donation toward the project.
