Two Canal Winchester Schools Named Purple Star Schools

Two Canal Winchester Schools are among the Class of 2023 schools recognized for supporting military students and families, the Ohio Department of Education announced on Monday, April 17.
“At Canal Winchester Schools, it’s important to us to support our students and their families so children in our community can be successful at school and beyond,” said Superintendent Kiya Hunt. “The Purple Star designation recognizes our staff’s commitment to understanding the unique challenges military students and families face and supporting them in making the most of the educational opportunities we offer.”
Canal Winchester Middle School earned the Purple Star designation for the first time, while Canal Winchester High School’s Purple Star status was renewed. Both schools earned the Purple Star designation through 2026.
“Demonstrating our commitment to our military students and families is an important example for our students as they learn more about themselves, the world around them, and their options for the future,” said Mr. Brian Moore, Canal Winchester Middle School Principal. “As we work to support all students in developing the skills of the Canal Winchester Portrait of a Graduate, this is one way we are helping our middle school students become respectful citizens who act with integrity and show empathy, compassion, and kindness.”
To earn the designation, schools are required to identify employees who have completed training on military children and families as family liaisons and to host a page of resources for military families on the school website. The school must also complete one optional activity, such as hosting a military recognition event, celebrating the Month of the Military Child in April, or offering staff professional development related to military children and families.
“At Canal Winchester High School, we are helping all of our students explore the 3Es – Employment in the workforce, Enrollment in post-secondary education, or Enlistment in the military – and identify which path is right for them,” said Mrs. Amy Warren, Principal. “As a Purple Star school, we are reinforcing for our students that each of these paths plays an important and valuable role in our communities and leads to a fulfilling and successful future.”
In addition to Canal Winchester Middle School and Canal Winchester High School, Winchester Trail Elementary is also a Purple Star-designated school.
