Sample Letter to Send to Legislators
Dear [Legislator’s Name],
I’m writing as a current [student/parent/resident/staff member] of the Canal Winchester Local School District who is concerned about how proposed changes could affect our schools and our community. Since 2009, Canal Winchester Schools has not asked our community to pass new levies. Instead, the district has carefully managed and balanced its budget, built a strong cash reserve, and made needed investments in programs and facilities - without asking for more from taxpayers.
I’m concerned that the proposed changes in the state budget would threaten the financial stability our community has worked so hard to build. I urge you to:
1. Keep the Fair Funding Formula.
The Fair School Funding Plan was designed to fix a system that was declared unconstitutional more than two decades ago. The state should keep and fully implement the Fair Funding Formula using 2025 data to determine the cost of educating children.
2. Remove the cap on cash carryover.
Our district has a responsible cash reserve of about 80% of its annual operating budget. That reserve lets us maintain valuable programs, make improvements without raising taxes, and avoid the ballot for new levies. A 30% cap would punish our district for managing funds well.
3. Invest public dollars in public schools.
Public schools serve the vast majority of Ohio’s students, yet the proposed budget would give more new funding to private school vouchers than to public districts. If a school receives public money, it should meet the same standards and accountability as public schools.
Public schools are here for all kids. Please be here for them, too. Support fair, stable, and student-focused funding for public schools.
Sincerely,
