Sharing the Road - School Bus Traffic Laws

Ohio drivers can be fined up to $500 for violating traffic laws related to school buses. Know the laws so we can all share the road safely!

Ohio has special laws about sharing the road with bus drivers to make sure all students and drivers are safe. ORC 4511.75 requires drivers to stop for a stopped school bus.

  • When a school bus stops to pick up or drop off a child, the bus's red lights and stop sign will flash. If a bus is stopped for this purpose, other drivers from ALL directions must stop ten feet from the front or rear of the bus. The driver cannot continue moving until the bus begins moving or the bus driver signals to the driver to proceed.
  • Drivers should NEVER pass a bus that is picking up or dropping off a student or has flashing red lights and stop sign.
  • Any violation may result in a fine of up to $500.
