Returning to School After Illness

Canal Winchester Schools follows the recommendations of the Ohio Department of Health and the CDC to control the spread of disease in schools. It's important for families to keep their students home when they are sick to avoid spreading illness. 

Please notify your school if your child contracts a communicable disease such as the flu, strep throat, head lice, or scabies so that we can take steps to keep other students healthy and safe.

  Description Return to school when...
Fever Temperature of 100.0 F or higher Fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication like Motrin or ibuprofen
Vomiting Within the past 24 hours Free from vomiting for at least 24 hours
Diarrhea Within the past 24 hours Free from diarrhea for at least 24
hours
Rash Body rash with itching or fever Free from rash, itching, or fever, and has been evaluated by a doctor if needed
Head Lice Itchy head, active head lice Treated with appropriate lice treatment at home and proof is provided to nurse
Eye Infection Redness, itching,
and/or “crusty”
drainage from eye
Evaluated by my doctor and have a note to return to school
Hospital Stay Hospital stay or ER visit Released by medical provider to return to school

 

Healthy at School

Families can help their students stay healthy by reminding them of important steps they can take to limit the spread of illness:

  • Washing hands 
  • Using hand sanitizer 
  • Avoid touching eyes, mouth nose until you wash your hands
  • Avoid contact with sick people
  • Stay home when sick 
  • Cover your mouth/nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing 
  • Get proper amount of sleep and eat well balanced meals to build healthy immune system
