English Language Learners
Welcome to Canal Winchester Schools! We're so glad you're here.
Did you know Canal Winchester students and families speak more than 30 different languages? How amazing is that? We celebrate this diversity and want to make sure that every student feels supported and included.
English Language Learners (ELLs) are students who are learning to speak English. Sometimes they are called English Learners (ELs) or Limited English Proficient (LEP) students, but all these titles mean the same thing. It's totally okay if you're still learning English – we're here to help! Students who are new to English or have a primary language other than English are supported by our certified EL Teachers at each building in the district. They are experts in teaching English to speakers of other languages and providing students with the support they need to succeed in their studies.
The Ohio Department of Education has guidelines to identify and assess students who might need some extra language assistance. When you join our schools, we'll gather information during the enrollment process to understand your primary language and how we can best support you.
Our ELL program is designed to make sure students have everything they need to excel in school. We focus on four essential language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Our goal is to help students become confident in English and succeed in all classes.
On this website, you'll find lots of helpful information and resources. Feel free to explore and get familiar with everything our district has to offer. If you have any questions or need assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to your teachers or any staff member. We're here to support you every step of the way.
Once again, welcome to Canal Winchester Schools – a place where everyone belongs and thrives! We can't wait to see you grow and achieve amazing things. Let's make this a fantastic learning journey together!
